Power Factor (PF) – Hidden Energy Waste

Apr 23, 2026

Why it matters

Low PF means your electrical system carries current that does no real work.

Standards

PF < 0.5 – Poor (avoid).

PF 0.5–0.7 – Acceptable for residential.

PF > 0.9 – Required for commercial projects.

PF > 0.95 – Boyin standard for downlights >10W.

Real example

A supermarket with 1,000 downlights (15W each, PF 0.5 vs 0.95).

Apparent power difference: 30 kVA vs 15.8 kVA.

Transformer and cable costs reduced by ~40% with high PF.

Tip: Check PF at both full load and 20% load (dimmed).
